A Brief History of Grand Saline
Grand Saline means "big salt" and the huge salt deposit located there is a main factor in the settlement of the community.  Use of the salt prairie found south of town predates Texas and was a source of salt for the ancient Caddo Indians.
The history of Grand Saline is actually a tale of two cities. The original settlement established in 1845 was known as Jordan's Saline and was located about a mile southeast of the present townsite on the Old Dallas-Shreveport Road. Primitive salt works, owned by John Jordan and A.T. McGee, were set up on the prairie to produce evaporated salt and a community grew around the operation. The first courthouse and post office in Van Zandt County were located in Jordan's Saline.
When the Texas & Pacific Railroad was extended from Marshall to Dallas in 1873, Sam Q. Richardson donated the landfor the easement and the depot was located north of the salt prairie. The stop was named "Grand Saline".
Over a period of several years, the population of Jordan's Saline dwindled as its citizens moved to the thriving community of Grand Saline where several salt companies were in operation and businesses, churches, and a school sprang up. Grand Saline was incorporated in 1895 and is now the location of one of the largest underground salt mining operations in the nation. Today there is no trace of Jordan's Saline.
